Alopecia is a term that means hair loss or baldness. The most known type of Alopecia is androgenic alopecia, which occurs in males adults. Frequent hairstyling routines, using hot air irons, strong blow dryers, and chemical treatments, as well as, tight ponytails or braids that pull the hair back, can sometimes cause, what is known as traction alopecia.  Alopecia can also happen due to underlying medical conditions, such as lack of iron.

In most cases, when hair loss occurs in patches is signifies alopecia areata. Alopecia areata typically diagnosed with sudden hair loss in patches, on the scalp or other parts of the body. If the alopecia areata left untreated, or if the disease does not respond to treatment, complete baldness can result in the affected area, this cases are usually referred to as alopecia totalis. When the entire body suffers from complete hair loss, it is referred to as Alopecia Universalis. This is similar to the effects that occur with chemotherapy treatments.

Alopecia areata affects approximately 2% of the population overall, including more than 5 million people in the United States alone. This common skin disease is highly unpredictable and cyclical. For some people, Hair can grow back in or fall out again at any time, and the disease course is different for each person.

There is no specific age, race, or gender that can get affected by alopecia areata,  not like with the androgenic alopecia. Since hair is an essential part of everyone’s appearance, especially at a young age, a lack of hair can cause plenty of self-esteem issues. While many people diagnosed with alopecia using wigs or special hats with hair attached to it, it is a different case when swimming with alopecia

Is it possible to swim with alopecia?

It is hard or even impossible to swim with a wig or a regular hat. Many people with alopecia especially young kids and teenagers are embarrassed to be seen with no hair. Not to mention, when swimming outside, the exposure to the harmful sun rays is even more dangerous, when there is no hair.

A swim cap could be a solution, but the regular lycra swim cap is too stretchy and loos and won’t stay in place, not to mention its not too stylish look, which makes it even more difficult in an already sensitive situation. The silicone swim cap is too tight, and it is not very comfortable especially for young children.

Like with any problem there is always a solution, even if not a conventional one, all it takes is research and motivation. That was the case of one dedicated mother, Mai from Texas in the USA, who was determined to find a perfect solution for her daughter, who was diagnosed with alopecia areata. Mai searched everywhere, till she found the Nammu hats store online. When she found Nammu swim caps, she hoped this will be the perfect solution for her daughter. What she hoped turned to be true

Stacey from Nova Scotia, Canada wrote “ Our daughter has alopecia and for her to keep a hat on her head at the beach is near impossible not to mention swimming. We ordered several of these caps and she loves them every beach and pool photo we have she is wearing them. It is so reassuring to know that they have sun protection and they are also very cool and comfortable to wear she loves them.”

Betsy W. from Glendale, California even use Nammu hats to keep her wig on in the water as she wrote: “I have had alopecia for the past 10 years and because I wear a wig it has really limited my participation in anything to do with water. I found your Nammu cap before we went on vacation in hopes that it would allow me to join my family for more adventures. It was great! Here’s a picture of me snorkeling with my Nammu cap. I wore a hair halo underneath the cap and it worked just great – the cap held the hairpiece very securely. I also wore it when we went sailing and I loved not having to worry about my wig. And then there was being able to swim in a pool for the first time in about 10 years. How wonderful being able to have races with my kids!”
