Few places on earth match the Galapagos Islands for snorkeling. Swimming with sea lions, penguins, marine iguanas, and whale sharks is an experience that stays with you forever. So does a severe sunburn if you go unprepared.

The Galapagos sits directly on the equator. UV levels are extreme year-round, and the combination of equatorial sun, water reflection, and extended time in the ocean creates one of the most intense sun exposure environments you will encounter anywhere.

Two of our customers snorkeled in the Galapagos wearing Nammu hats. One described it simply: “Used this snorkeling in the Galapagos Islands — Fantastic!!” Another, a man prone to burning, wore his hat for four hours in the sun: “My head was one of the only areas on my body that was not burned and in pain.”

Here is how to protect yourself properly.

Why the Galapagos Is Particularly Intense

The equatorial location means the sun hits at a near-90-degree angle for much of the day. The UV index regularly exceeds 12 — the maximum on the standard scale. Water reflection amplifies this further. Most Galapagos snorkeling sessions last 30 to 60 minutes, often in the middle of the day when UV peaks.

The scalp, back of the neck, and ears are directly facing the sun the entire time you are face-down in the water.

Essential Sun Protection for Galapagos Snorkeling

Swim Hat With Ear Coverage

The Nammu EX UV Pro with Ear Flap was designed for exactly this kind of snorkeling. UPF 50+ fabric, a square back for neck coverage, ear flaps, and a secure fit that stays on through currents and dives. It works with full-face snorkel masks and traditional masks alike.

For maximum protection, the EX UV Pro with Visor and Ear Flap adds a flexible brim for face and forehead coverage.

Full Upper Body UPF Coverage

Pack a UPF 50+ swim shirt and wear it every time you enter the water. Sunscreen washes off quickly and chemical formulas are harmful to the Galapagos marine ecosystem. A UPF shirt is the most effective and environmentally responsible option.

Sun Wrap for Between Dives

Galapagos tours typically involve multiple snorkeling sites in a single day, with boat time between each. A UV sun wrap provides full shoulder and torso coverage while you wait for the next site.

Galapagos-Specific Tips

  • Wear your hat the moment you board the boat. The sun is intense even before you enter the water.
  • Choose a swim hat over sunscreen for your scalp. Sunscreen on the scalp is difficult to apply thoroughly and washes off immediately. A swim hat provides continuous protection with zero maintenance.
  • Bring a spare hat. Tour days are long. Having a dry hat to switch to between sessions keeps you comfortable.
  • Check Galapagos regulations on sunscreen. Marine protected areas increasingly restrict chemical sunscreens. UPF clothing requires no chemicals at all.

The Galapagos is a once-in-a-lifetime destination. Come prepared and you will spend every possible minute in the water.
