If you have lupus, you already know the sun is not your friend.
Photosensitivity — an abnormal sensitivity to UV light — affects up to 70% of people with lupus. For most people, a day at the pool or beach means sunscreen and a hat. For someone with lupus, UV exposure can trigger a flare, cause a rash, worsen fatigue, or even affect internal organs.
So many lupus patients simply stop swimming. And that’s a real loss — because swimming is one of the best low-impact exercises recommended for people with lupus. It’s gentle on joints, cooling on the body, and genuinely therapeutic.
The problem isn’t the water. It’s the sun above it.
The gap in sun protection for swimmers
Sunscreen helps — but it washes off. Reapplying every 40–80 minutes while you’re in the water is impractical at best, and many sunscreen formulas aren’t designed for repeated water exposure. The scalp and ears — areas extremely difficult to reach with sunscreen — are also among the most sun-exposed parts of the body when you’re in the water.
Regular swim caps offer zero UV protection. They’re made for speed and hair containment, not sun safety.
This is the gap that UPF-rated swimwear fills. UPF 50+ fabric blocks over 98% of UV rays — it works wet or dry, doesn’t wash off, and requires no reapplication. For lupus patients, it’s not a luxury. It’s a practical tool for staying active safely.
What to look for in a UV-protective swim hat
Not all “sun hats” are created equal — and not all are designed for actual swimming. Here’s what matters:
UPF 50+ rating. This is the textile equivalent of SPF. UPF 50 blocks 98% of UV rays. Look for this number specifically, not vague “UV protective” language.
Stays on in the water. A hat that blows off the moment you dive in is useless. Look for snug, stretchy fabric (80–100% nylon/spandex blends) that moves with you.
Covers the scalp and ears. For lupus patients, ear and scalp coverage is critical. Full-coverage styles — or hats with ear flaps — offer the most protection.
Breathable and comfortable. Stiff or rough fabric causes friction and discomfort during activity. Soft, stretchy nylon is the gold standard.
Dries fast. You don’t want to be cold and wet between swims. Lightweight nylon dries in minutes.
Why swimming is still worth it — even with lupus
Rheumatologists frequently recommend aquatic exercise for lupus patients because:
- Water reduces joint stress by up to 90% compared to land exercise
- Swimming improves cardiovascular health without heat-generating intensity
- Cooler water helps manage body temperature, which can be a lupus trigger
- The rhythmic nature of swimming supports mental health and reduces stress — a known lupus flare trigger
The goal isn’t to avoid the water. It’s to manage UV exposure so you can stay in it.
A note from our customers
We hear from customers across the health spectrum — people with alopecia, post-chemo patients protecting sensitive scalps, and outdoor swimmers who simply don’t want to burn. One customer wrote:
“This has been a wonderful swim cap for our daughter (post chemo). It protects her head while swimming and is very comfortable and stylish.”
Another:
“I absolutely love my hat. I wear it every time I swim outside. It stays on so well and is really comfortable. So amazing for sun protection!”
For lupus patients, that combination — effective UV protection, stays on in the water, comfortable enough to forget you’re wearing it — is exactly what makes the difference between sitting on the sidelines and getting in the water.
Getting back in the water
If lupus has kept you out of the pool, you’re not alone — and you’re not stuck. With the right protective gear, early morning or late afternoon swims (when UV is lower), and guidance from your rheumatologist on your personal triggers, swimming can come back into your life.
Sun protection in the water is possible. It just requires gear that was actually designed for it.
Nammu swim hats are UPF 50+ rated, made from 80% nylon / 20% spandex, and designed to stay on during active swimming. They’re used by outdoor swimmers, cancer survivors, people with alopecia, cochlear implant wearers, and anyone who needs real sun protection in the water. Ships worldwide from Canada.
